Parish councils have powers through legislation to represent and support their local communities. They help to protect their local environment and provide/maiantain local services and facilities. However they should only make decisions based on a specific power given to them by statute. This means that councils are established and regulated by Acts of Parliament.
Policies and procedures provide guidance to councillors and staff to ensure that all business is conducted in accordance with the powers they have been granted.
